PFOS / PFAS Filtration

A PFOS/PFAS water filtration systems is a specialized water treatment system designed to reduce toxic chemicals known as PFAS (Pre- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) - including PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonate) - from drinking water.

These systems are used in homes, businesses, and municipalities to make water safe to

How it works

PFAS molecules are chemically stable and water-resistant, making them hard to remove with standard filtration like basic charcoal or sediment filter.  So, PFAS systems use special technologies, such as:

Activated Carbon Filtration (Granular Activated Carbon - GAC)

  • Mechanism: PFAS molecules adhere (adsorb) to the surface of porous carbon.
  • Effective for: Long-chain PFAS like PFOA and PFOS.
  • Less effective for short-chain PFAS.

Ion Exchange Resin

  • Mechanism: PFAS molecules are attracted to and bind to positively charged resin beads.
  • Works well for: Both long- and short-chain PFAS.
  • More efficient and often faster than GAC.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

  • Mechanism: Water is pushed through a semi-permeable membrane that blocks PFAS molecules.
  • Highly effective, removes up to 99% of PFAS.
  • Cons: Slower process, generates wastewater, and more expensive.

Multi-Stage Systems

  • Many systems combine technologies (e.g., RO + carbon + sediment filter) for better performance and broader contaminant reduction.

Benefits of a PFOs / PFAS System

Health Protection

  • Reduces exposure to chemicals linked to:
  •     Cancer
  •     Hormone disruption
  •     Immune system suppression
  •     Live/kidney damage
  •     Developmental issues in infants

Safe, Clean Drinking Water

  • Especially important in areas with known PFAS contamination (common near military bases, airports, factories).

Peace of Mind

  • Knowing your family is drinking water free from toxic "forever chemicals"

Supports Regulatory Compliance

  • Helps municipalities and businesses meet EPA and local safety standards for PFAS

important notes

Not All Filters Reduce PFAS

  • Many standard filter (like Brita pitchers) do not reduce PFAS

Filter Replacement Is Critical

  • Over time, carbon or resin filters become saturated and stop working.

System Type Matters

  • Point-of-use (POU) systems (like reverse osmosis) are cheaper and target drinking water.
  • Whole-house systems treat all water in the home (good for bathing, cooking, etc.), but are more expensive.
